Hmm I understand what Swift’s message was ie ignore cliches/stereotypes blablahblah and the director released a statement where he said something along the lines of “it was all innocent fun”. That in itself wouldn’t be an excuse for racism anyway? Racism is racism.
As for the video, I do and can see where the concerns are coming from. Most of the video IS fine apart from the twerking scene as the women are objectified and simply made into butts whereas the rest of the dancers we are able to see their faces, however we aren’t able to see theirs. I don’t think Taylor or the director meant it harmfully and I’m sure it was “all innocent”. The point is not about the twerking in itself either but about black women’s place in the media and how they are not only under represented but when they are it usually is in a hypersexualised fashion. If the video was about shaking of stereostype as the director himself claimed why not make them real people with a whole body rather than just shaking butts!!!!
A lot of people have said “oh but it’s not as bad as Lily Allen’s/Mileu Cyrus’ videos” or whoever but sexism is still sexism. And racism is still racism. There is no way to be less bad at either, you’re either being racist or you aren’t. There is no in between.racism feminism taylor swift shake it off
couples come dine with me is just not as easy to binge watch, it makes me feel v squeamish!!!
I’m trying hard to live by Cat Principles.
1- I am glorious above all things
2- Eat when hungry, sleep when sleepy, play when bored
3- Affection is given and received on my terms and only mine
4- Show displeasure clearly.
6- Demand the things you want. If they aren’t given, demand them again, but louder this time.
7- If you are touched when you don’t want to be, say so. If they continue to touch you, make them bleed.
In which case, you fail by default.
